I hope you enjoy it!<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/S7ghe85e4dNV8gk3Pfq28tMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-HF7790z9yxg/T2s-V78rJWI/AAAAAAAAEfU/s3sGBQ1RecQ/s400/SA%2520trip%2520map.png" height="400" width="388" /></a><br />The trip covered 5 countries, 10 border crossings, and around 18,000km. The idea for our trip was hatched about 4 years ago, but the serious planning didn’t start until the summer of 2011. My dad and uncle were quickly on board and we spent a large part of the fall of 2011 getting our bikes ready. We rode a shake-down trip around Lake Huron in October. We crated the three bikes at our house in Michigan in December and delivered them to a trucking service that shipped them to Miami. From there they flew Centurion Air Cargo to Santiago International Airport.<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/3NoWr9KntgD94vo6koECrtMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-d3z1IBKIClA/TvJUbtnPEpI/AAAAAAAACq4/rhuiR32I_jY/s640/DSCN4203.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/pM_8K32DHPXYj_u9ZTCW99MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-9EFidDm8MWQ/TwOp29qimUI/AAAAAAAACtQ/LdxwHavLBt0/s800/photo%25203.JPG" height="478" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/pjhm2DNwpr83UaMP1GgNjtMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-D37uR-bzyAE/TwOp3E86Z6I/AAAAAAAACtU/jApUd1eHcGE/s800/photo%25204.JPG" height="478" width="640" /></a>Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07688392926064554387noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4558399279271983404.post-21735948165236569172012-04-11T21:42:00.000-04:002012-04-11T15:43:13.527-04:00THE BIKES<a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/v9_nfhtYSGdTmyhktPSF-dMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-RP1XA5RScyg/T1-awZ8ZyXI/AAAAAAAADs0/YGCgg8k3k5o/s640/DSCN4296.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><br />I rode a 2008 BMW G 650 X-Country with the following hardware and modifications:<br />• Evaporation canister removal<br />• Leo Vince Exhaust <br />• Alaska Leathers Sheep Skin seat cover<br />• Rubber throttle palm rest<br />• Xpel Vinyl Headlight Protector<br />• 6000k H4 Headlight Bulb<br />• UNI Foam Air Filter<br />• Shorai LFX Lithium Battery<br />• SW-Motech Luggage rack with Hepco & Becker Top-plate<br />• Hepco & Becker Side luggage racks<br />• Wolfman Expedition Dry Bags<br />• BMW Tank Bag<br />• Hepco & Becker 42L Top Case<br />• R&G Racing Tail Tidy<br />• Stephan Scheffelmeier Skid Plate<br />• Hot Rod welding 7L X-tank<br />• Highway Dirtbikes Hand Gaurds<br />• Wunderlich Windscreen<br />• Wunderlich Windscreen Extender<br />• Wunderlich Front Fender Extender<br />• Garmin Zumo 550 GPS<br />• Chatterbox X1 communicator<br />• Continental Rear Air Shock from BMW X-Challenge<br />• Touratech Chain Guide<br />• SW-Motech X-Challenge Center Stand (Shortened for X-Country)<br />• Metzler Tourance Tires with Slime in tubes<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ueJ_FpKsi_QZ2A86IxJdf9MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-adEh6cdR3Ow/Tzrrz3L58EI/AAAAAAAADWQ/bqJE3Mc4anU/s640/DSCN4393.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><br />My dad rode a 2010 Ducati Hypermotard 796 with the following hardware and modifications:<br />Easily removable trip items<br />• Maier Cyclone windshield<br />• Wunderlich wind deflector<br />• Givi tank bag<br />• Homemade aluminum saddle bag support rack<br />• Wolfman Expedition dry bags<br />• Ducati luggage rack<br />• Sea-Line wide mouth dry duffle top bag<br />• Garmin Zumo 550 GPS<br />• Chatterbox X1 communicator<br />• Alaska Leather sheepskin seat cover<br /><br />• Evaporation canister removal - Luckily, since they were all delayed, we made our connections without trouble. The flight from MIA to SCL was only half full which meant we got plenty of room to spread out. The flight attendant was a fan of military personnel, past and present, and she kept a steady stream of spirits coming my way. I only had one bottle of wine before going to sleep, but the other 10 bottles became our “camping wine”. After arriving in Chile and paying our $140 USD reciprocity fee, immigrations and customs were a breeze. We took a taxi to the Airport Hilton and found out our bikes weren’t getting in until tonight or tomorrow, so we had some dinner at a nearby mall and relaxed at the pool while we eagerly awaited our bikes.Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07688392926064554387noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4558399279271983404.post-21240367882519185592012-04-11T15:40:00.000-04:002012-04-11T15:41:12.307-04:00DAY 2 – 1/14/12 SANTIAGO VINA DEL MAR SANTIAGOWe woke up around 0800 still eager to get the bikes. Unfortunately after checking the status of the shipment online, it appears we won’t be able to get them until after the weekend, on Monday. We took this news with disappointment, but were determined to make the best out of the next two days. We took a taxi to the bus station and got a ticket to Vina del Mar.<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/OnD7UwHbqpCqsc9yWij5SdMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-7EFu5sJ4laI/TysyMElGwzI/AAAAAAAADIc/Qu50FckfzsE/s640/DSCN4237.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br />This is a nice beach city I remembered from my last visit to Chile on 2005.<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/i9ApMDf6kEueR7WOIdtEi9MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-DApibjIIRP0/T1-VIx9q24I/AAAAAAAADp8/n3DncXLcsYE/s640/DSCN4243.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/5h5KYms1111HOFgsqqKpuNMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QMFVL6stibU/T1-VQVBmC1I/AAAAAAAADqY/BnLG85kobBs/s640/DSCN4244.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/l7PXWV_yr2e74Jnm6YjYfdMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-t-Urunnqpfg/T1-VI0f9eKI/AAAAAAAADqA/sS6FA-SK2-I/s640/DSCN4240.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/PBrW712Sb7bwcZ3WyWeeYdMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-TGXRxZDKWL4/TysySR4RhnI/AAAAAAAADIk/qfEvmcznJM4/s640/DSCN4247.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/EuQ6kC1I6CiULSkF1zv5ydMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-kZnDKus3Vro/T1-VNyU-QJI/AAAAAAAADqM/IQ1t_Esm9o4/s640/DSCN4259.JPG" height="551" width="640" /></a><br />We explored the city by foot for about 4 hours, then took the bus back to Santiago and a cab to our next hotel downtown. After breaking into our stash of camping wine, we headed to Pio Nono Street to enjoy some Saturday night festivities. The bars in Chile are open all night and the bands usually don’t come on until around midnight. As it was only around 2100, we enjoyed our Pisco Sours while others around us were still working on dinner.<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/qDv6eeHABYDBYM6PB93u5dMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-lq4dzLVW1HU/TyszeJc819I/AAAAAAAADJQ/K_HAFSr3hb8/s640/DSCN4268.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a> <br />On the way back, Bill stopped to ask for directions.<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/T_pkrz98n4Hexmp3XhQVtNMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-0MSERuZ7Cxg/T1-VWPvGrpI/AAAAAAAADqo/lwN8cMoEF50/s640/DSCN4266.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a>Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07688392926064554387noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4558399279271983404.post-24939448707361158482012-04-11T15:39:00.000-04:002012-04-11T15:40:20.780-04:00DAY 3 – 1/15/12 SANTIAGOThis morning we slept in until about 0930 and awoke to the happy news that our bikes were waiting for us at the airport, but being a Sunday, we couldn’t retrieve them until the next morning. I just hoped everything went smoothly. The hotel shuttle driver took us to the cargo company’s office to pick up the Airway Bill that came with the bikes. This package of stamped papers also included our original titles. After about 10 min and $70USD each we had our paperwork and were on our way to the airport. It was good we were there early, as the customs office at the airport was open from 0900-1345 and 1500-1630. It would be our first of many examples of the all important Siesta! The paperwork here took about an hour. After everything was signed and stamped in quadruplicate, we were finally reunited with our babies!<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/8j0XAdDo2mxPWEqycJDpydMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-8TB3isWrHE0/Tys0ThxnYnI/AAAAAAAADJY/z5-Kc2tne3I/s640/DSCN4280.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br />The warehouse workers were very nice and allowed us to reassemble our bikes there and took care of our used bike crates for us.<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/TyLdJSp_0Ivs8H1bp2Ez1tMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-3JYubke3DWY/Tys0cvxO4SI/AAAAAAAADZo/Cuq6AuYrRSw/s640/DSCN4282.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/XOUMZZkguwJpK5jGyiUSC9MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QYy_AZrN2A8/Tys0a9LYlgI/AAAAAAAADJg/1cUrLNyjaTc/s640/DSCN4281.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /> The only catch was the $80 USD fee per bike. He proudly claimed there were only 22 of the models in Argentina, and I believe it.<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/o01z7ET6HAlBsZuEGoYmqtMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-sSvGhO8SRZo/T1-b9EzGvHI/AAAAAAAADwA/rRKl8M8wBd0/s640/DSCN4338.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/i4mwJlRFkt2ZClmEleGR6tMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-5Vt9FaNSV-s/T1-b-0vyevI/AAAAAAAADwM/cD-FfGoBM8E/s640/DSCN4339.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><br />Bill came back from his appointment was bad news: Detached retina requiring immediate surgery and 6-8 weeks of recovery time. We had the day to prepare ourselves for this possibility, but it was still a hard pill to swallow. Only three days on the bike, and now he has to leave. Well we didn’t have much time to dwell on it because he had to catch a 1700 bus to Bariloche, with a flight to Bs. As. in the morning, then back to Michigan for surgery. We said our farewells and stashed his bike and gear in a hotel garage in the hope that he could come back after the surgery and collect it.<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Cu8Nk-hRg0cUL9ZeDAiYM9MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-51AT0AEcoes/T1-b_5KaNuI/AAAAAAAADwU/VSDg33H0clY/s640/DSCN4341.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a>Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07688392926064554387noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4558399279271983404.post-34263125181296161452012-04-11T15:36:00.001-04:002012-04-11T15:36:57.499-04:00DAY 8 – 1/20/12 ESQUEL --> PUERTO MORENO<iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Av+Ameghino&daddr=RN+40&geocode=FQ5Hcf0dXO2_-w%3BFXpUOf0dVDrG-w&aq=1&oq=chillan&sll=-46.195042,-70.015869&sspn=4.129768,10.821533&t=h&hl=en&mra=dme&mrsp=1&sz=7&ie=UTF8&ll=-44.840291,-69.719238&spn=5.453066,9.338379&z=6&output=embed"></iframe><br /><small><a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=embed&saddr=Av+Ameghino&daddr=RN+40&geocode=FQ5Hcf0dXO2_-w%3BFXpUOf0dVDrG-w&aq=1&oq=chillan&sll=-46.195042,-70.015869&sspn=4.129768,10.821533&t=h&hl=en&mra=dme&mrsp=1&sz=7&ie=UTF8&ll=-44.840291,-69.719238&spn=5.453066,9.338379&z=6" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left"> </a></small><br /><br />544 km / 93.1 kph ave / 140 kph max<br />8 hrs tot / 5:50 hrs mov<br /><br />This morning we were on the road by 0900. We were on Ruta 40 the whole day. The green mountain passes of yesterday gave way to a much dryer and flatter landscape today. We had a sandwich lunch that we had packed earlier on the side of the road at Tamariscos. The town was literally one building in the middle of nowhere with nothing for miles in any direction. <br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/cduTkFasnem_p5hYLgqbX9MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-KRyxf9LHubs/Tys5PAFMRJI/AAAAAAAADLc/ACgBT4FbHVQ/s640/DSCN4344.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Otywuqv-ZbhbqcGgcxbtSNMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-cXIU67R8K3A/T1-cFWdr-xI/AAAAAAAADwc/EuAgc0DvePw/s640/DSCN4342.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/F1_rb96AYzcDJFpx3QFma9MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--jbLqynr9dg/T1-cIKKnVUI/AAAAAAAADwo/CUplgRJlMMw/s640/DSCN4343.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><br />We had our first fill up of the day at Taka, but were stretching my tank’s limit when we pulled into the next station at Rio Mayo. I took about 10 psi out of each tire, dad a little more, and we both noticed the difference right away. Even so, it was a challenging 50 km of going about 60 kph. I avoided taking my first dirt nap of the trip, but did have a couple of close calls when my line I was riding shifted and I found myself doing the “wobble jobble” in the loose stuff.<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/dkyaqxsaSkEI95VFsr688tMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-7g_FqKXXyiU/T1-cJFQt8qI/AAAAAAAAEh8/03CS5rChkMM/s640/DSCN4346.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/8wRGZiBgPFnPguB_J7_Ck9MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XyxWinGW8cI/T1-cNq8BK4I/AAAAAAAAEiI/B90jcf09I_s/s640/DSCN4347.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><br />We were expecting the whole 118 km to Puerto Moreno to be gravel, but they were in the process of paving it, so the last 70 km was brand new, pristine asphalt. We waited until 0900 in our tents for it to stop, but eventually got in our raingear and broke camp. Just as we got everything packed up, it stopped raining. Our first stop was Bajo Caracoles where we confirmed what our maps and other riders had told us, that this was the last gas station until Tres Lagos, 338 km down the road. The original Ruta 40 was in the process of getting paved, so we had to drive on a temporary road that tested our tailbone toughness. <br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/1Q73a7LbM6_JjIKRX5t41NMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-wbBJOpA4uMU/TySHuKckCbI/AAAAAAAADBw/2h5pKwoWmi8/s640/P1000208.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Qo9m3-RbmcwCLQjViUmqZdMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-aaIdf0aLTdc/Tys6TINPBXI/AAAAAAAADLw/LWaCgoH29QQ/s640/DSCN4355.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/SSZsHvEu7iQBzejJnfdWaNMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-htd2CJjxrQY/T1-ceTp2mNI/AAAAAAAADxw/e0O1R7poVY8/s640/DSCN4356.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/_hyGwacRC3i08qhHGNyzGtMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-frNYwymB-Q0/T1-cjVqJSvI/AAAAAAAADx8/97YRLwemwZI/s640/DSCN4357.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/fLdBX0aXORzn7JRAPmg6stMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-7rQ_lkPOcBA/T1-cnwOBcvI/AAAAAAAADyM/0u0MM6hcJbU/s640/DSCN4359.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/_6Uw9Mk7fGR3tJbq4uYmdtMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-7i6BhxFo5do/T1-cr0_K53I/AAAAAAAADyc/ekUQRXP2rcI/s640/DSCN4360.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/EucX-nphyFivf6ksZkJzNNMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-T_WZ1ve1_Y8/Tys7K2QwCPI/AAAAAAAADMM/U2jxthV6Jxw/s640/DSCN4363.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><br />The road was mostly loose gravel but there was one particular nasty section of about 20 km of sand. During a blind corner leading to deep sand dad had a slow speed tip over when his 17” front wheel stopped turning and his leg to stabilize the bike slide under him. No harm done.<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/F4nhQBy8-qxiVjsrucdErdMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-k2mfW4v1n-c/TysyT7f3YOI/AAAAAAAADIw/ujp4WzK0xW0/s640/DSCN4364.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><br />After the sand, the road turned to hard packed dirt with partially buried boulders. It felt a lot like a cobblestone road. My 19” front tire and big suspension travel gobbled this up. I barley felt the bumps, but dad and his bike were getting shook to pieces. After the cobblestone, it was loose gravel again, but by this time we were proficient enough to go about 70 kph. My fuel light came on right as we reached Tres Lagos, meaning I was down to my 1/2 gal reserve. Whew, we made it after a grueling 200+ miles since our last fill up! Not so fast! After conferring with a few locals and confirming with a fellow ADVer on a 1974 BMW with sidecar, we found out there was no gas in the town. It turns out the gas station had been out since November and the owner couldn’t afford to buy more. Hmm, must be some poor business practices in order to not be able to profitably operate the only gas station around for hundreds of miles. Luckily, Carl, the German on the old Beemer, had some he could spare to get us on our way to the next station 165 km away in El Calafate the next morning. We set up camp at the local dump for free and had dinner with Carl and his wife. They would be heading home in May after a year in South America on their trusty steed.<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/6axiXqXovGWp5H18qqyN2tMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-g2ji-LtcR9M/TySIqowploI/AAAAAAAADB8/D8WrVGXo2V4/s640/P1000212.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/_yoKtN8MhmSSH_Za94DHUNMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-8U2obo9DsME/TySI1TgwT3I/AAAAAAAADCI/W9WRFwaucg8/s640/P1000213.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/JqrIrlpfH7rbUutqwvkeBNMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-vhZvKpl5bs0/TySI1r_2QOI/AAAAAAAADCM/QhGix69N4uo/s640/P1000214.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a>Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07688392926064554387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4558399279271983404.post-7945488858062713722012-04-11T15:35:00.001-04:002012-04-11T15:35:46.372-04:00DAY 10 – 1/22/12 TRES LAGOS --> RIO GALLEGOS<iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=RN+40&daddr=-50.3385,-72.25904+to:Av+Lisandro+de+la+Torre&geocode=FagiC_0dwGO9-w%3BFTzl__wdIGqx-ymvs3R2vQy7vTHXSs1sun7wQg%3BFX5S7Pwd4lvf-w&aq=1&oq=chillan&sll=-51.082822,-71.037598&sspn=3.748189,10.821533&t=h&hl=en&mra=dpe&mrsp=1&sz=7&via=1&ie=UTF8&z=6&output=embed"></iframe><br /><small><a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=embed&saddr=RN+40&daddr=-50.3385,-72.25904+to:Av+Lisandro+de+la+Torre&geocode=FagiC_0dwGO9-w%3BFTzl__wdIGqx-ymvs3R2vQy7vTHXSs1sun7wQg%3BFX5S7Pwd4lvf-w&aq=1&oq=chillan&sll=-51.082822,-71.037598&sspn=3.748189,10.821533&t=h&hl=en&mra=dpe&mrsp=1&sz=7&via=1&ie=UTF8&z=6" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left"> </a></small><br /><br />475 km / 79.6 kph ave / 138 max<br />8:30 hrs tot / 6 hrs mov<br /><br />Hooray, a day of 100% asphalt! We arrived at 1245 and siesta ended at 1300, so we ate sandwiches while we waited. After filling up with 93 octane we were headed for our 2nd border crossing of the day at San Sebastian. To get there, we had two routes to choose from, both gravel. We decided to go the southern route on the way down, then the northern one on the way back. The road was alright, except if you were following the right hand line, it would occasionally unexpectedly drop off the shoulder into the ditch. We didn’t go down, but both my dad and I had scary moments. After about 40 min of a pleasant drive through the hills, the road opened up into the plains and the wind really picked up. The crosswind was so strong it would push you out of your line into the loose stuff. At that point you’re just along for the ride until you’re deposited in the next line of hard-packed gravel to your left. Luckily there was virtually no opposing traffic. It was definitely tricky riding. I was having an easier time of it than my dad. His street tires provided zero lateral traction. It was with much relief that we reached the last 40 km going straight east, with the 50-60mph crosswind becoming a stiff tailwind. It felt like we were literally flying towards the border. This crossing was separated into a Chile exit building and a Argentina entry building 10 km further. Both went very smooth and quick. The wind along the coast was just as strong but at least now we were on pavement. Curiously enough, about half way to Rio Grande the wind shifted direction and started coming from off the ocean. When we got to Rio Grande at 1700, we decided to do the remaining 209 km to Ushuaia in the morning. There were no hostels in town, but we found a B&B with indoor bike parking for $280 Arg pesos.Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07688392926064554387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4558399279271983404.post-84469535608089359862012-04-11T15:34:00.001-04:002012-04-11T15:34:44.952-04:00DAY 12 – 1/24/12 RIO GRANDE --> USHUIA --> RIO GRANDE<iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Rio+Grande,+Tierra+del+Fuego,+Argentina&daddr=-54.80065,-68.31507+to:RN+3&geocode=Fb8zy_wd0a32-ynLwX6pRBZLvDEoc1IBRT8nSA%3BFfbOu_wdQpjt-ymPDAMLJyNMvDExlWkLzAgMrw%3BFbxjyvwd-tz1-w&aq=2&oq=rio+gr&sll=-54.268432,-67.93396&sspn=1.742044,5.410767&t=h&hl=en&mra=dme&mrsp=2&sz=8&via=1&ie=UTF8&z=7&output=embed"></iframe><br /><small><a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=embed&saddr=Rio+Grande,+Tierra+del+Fuego,+Argentina&daddr=-54.80065,-68.31507+to:RN+3&geocode=Fb8zy_wd0a32-ynLwX6pRBZLvDEoc1IBRT8nSA%3BFfbOu_wdQpjt-ymPDAMLJyNMvDExlWkLzAgMrw%3BFbxjyvwd-tz1-w&aq=2&oq=rio+gr&sll=-54.268432,-67.93396&sspn=1.742044,5.410767&t=h&hl=en&mra=dme&mrsp=2&sz=8&via=1&ie=UTF8&z=7" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left"> </a></small><br /><br />477 km / 77 kph ave / 144 kph max<br />8 hrs tot / 6 hrs mov<br /><br />We were on the road by 0915 and the first 100 km to Ushuaia were pretty boring. I had used 3 L to go 50 km. going 80 mph into the headwind will do that I guess. After filling up, oiling our chains, and getting some food at the gas station, we decided to push on – Northwards towards Bs. As. It felt good to be heading into new territory on new roads after our three days in TDF. Ruta 3 is nice so far and the wind is not too bad. The weather is getting nicer too. We ended up staying at Comandante Luis Piedrabuena, - an “Oasis in Patagonia”. We stayed at a cabana for $120 Arg pesos and took a walk through town.<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/sAuLodGCxNpDPr9GXkaS5dMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-cYtS_qZIofQ/T2zJPUdg9VI/AAAAAAAAEiY/OTe6CBS4Z_g/s640/P1000289.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/61r1K9wap2MWUtXUoxkXxdMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-r_DXY-ZiAeY/T1-gka2i2fI/AAAAAAAAD5o/clqJ_BtIHZM/s640/P1000290.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/J9FwbX05KtXQpxX8vm_OLtMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-gAt3MDxLeQU/T1-gk-MTpzI/AAAAAAAAD5o/O_RqQYdXKPY/s640/P1000292.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/vpG5T9k7nfGu1mvKXzsu8NMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-KzDBaUwz6F8/T1-gld4h3bI/AAAAAAAAD5o/WMH4kvjP8pk/s640/P1000294.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/FWEFtvCMnTu23BTx3BEhENMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-E9EnGndEmig/T1-gm8w7pwI/AAAAAAAAD5o/-V0-UCLb5YM/s640/P1000297.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/LbbB6t-peFtH2d4BXYMgG9MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-hb8z0qOmQyg/T1-gndFpSKI/AAAAAAAAD5o/gVLc7N0rpxI/s640/P1000298.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a>Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07688392926064554387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4558399279271983404.post-38875238330472827922012-04-11T15:31:00.000-04:002012-04-11T15:33:25.128-04:00DAY 14 – 1/26/12 COMANDANTE LUIS PIEDRABUENA --> COMODORE RIVADAVIA<iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Comandante+Luis+Piedrabuena,+Santa+Cruz,+Argentina&daddr=RN+3&geocode=FbhSBf0d2H7k-ykn1vub23PHvTG7K4UXcJ--7g%3BFcqfQ_0dJkn5-w&aq=0&oq=COMANDANTE+LUIS+PIEDRABUENA&sll=-47.931066,-68.312988&sspn=7.996746,21.643066&t=h&hl=en&mra=dme&mrsp=1&sz=6&ie=UTF8&z=5&output=embed"></iframe><br /><small><a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=embed&saddr=Comandante+Luis+Piedrabuena,+Santa+Cruz,+Argentina&daddr=RN+3&geocode=FbhSBf0d2H7k-ykn1vub23PHvTG7K4UXcJ--7g%3BFcqfQ_0dJkn5-w&aq=0&oq=COMANDANTE+LUIS+PIEDRABUENA&sll=-47.931066,-68.312988&sspn=7.996746,21.643066&t=h&hl=en&mra=dme&mrsp=1&sz=6&ie=UTF8&z=5" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left"> </a></small><br /><br />560 km / 88 kph ave / 142 kph max<br />9:50 hrs tot / 6:21 hrs mov<br /><br />Today was all about wind, wind, and more wind. By this point, we were already mentally prepared to be done riding for the day, so we headed across the street to a grove of trees off the road where we were able to set up and enjoy a nice supper and quiet evening with no one bothering us.<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/W8BB8RXuOj2HrN23AlION9MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-wYF26YPqt-g/TzF1KLl0CjI/AAAAAAAADTc/jXeTKIFyTLc/s640/P1000335.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ThdM6CesOyHvUKUb1BSSQdMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-8DZR4WR2d6I/TzF2OR3b02I/AAAAAAAADT0/2indRMQRx64/s640/P1000336.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/cIuuTzI0JznOQzI5l-JOktMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-MVvnXi--jQk/T1-hch6wswI/AAAAAAAAD5o/Rleh_5lC8L8/s640/P1000337.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a>Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07688392926064554387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4558399279271983404.post-46073308030306395682012-04-11T15:29:00.001-04:002012-04-11T15:29:50.437-04:00DAY 18 – 1/30/12 SALADILLO --> DAKAR MOTOS, BUENOS AIRES<iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=RN+205&daddr=Luis+Mar%C3%ADa+Drago&geocode=FUY24P0dKJRv_A%3BFfr98P0dOOSC_A&sll=-34.58291,-58.664246&sspn=0.306969,0.676346&t=h&hl=en&mra=me&mrsp=1,0&sz=11&ie=UTF8&ll=-35.012002,-59.051514&spn=1.574652,2.334595&z=8&output=embed"></iframe><br /><small><a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=embed&saddr=RN+205&daddr=Luis+Mar%C3%ADa+Drago&geocode=FUY24P0dKJRv_A%3BFfr98P0dOOSC_A&sll=-34.58291,-58.664246&sspn=0.306969,0.676346&t=h&hl=en&mra=me&mrsp=1,0&sz=11&ie=UTF8&ll=-35.012002,-59.051514&spn=1.574652,2.334595&z=8" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left"> </a></small><br /><br />145 km / 75.8 kph ave / 121 kph max<br />2 hrs tot / 2 hrs mov<br /><br />Today's short ride came at a great time because it was rainy most of the way to Bs. Everyone was ok, but I'm sure it was a scary moment for those two.<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/I2tpc4lraQeqKIVPW3EiNNMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-VWWbBADMcj8/T1-pXqPS-UI/AAAAAAAAD94/F-9fRHhyodA/s640/P1000422.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/hozL855hZUfhtFHpQiMnw9MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-QQ1AFXmQARE/T1-pYLyCbTI/AAAAAAAAD-A/LTc1A3huyJc/s640/P1000423.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/17t17IOgBZH9gyFULhFlMtMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-hL7lI05NNnQ/T1-pYpEPsOI/AAAAAAAAD-I/-oXt5i_1abI/s640/P1000424.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><br />After arriving at our hostel and checking in for two nights, we took a walk to where the Iquazu and Paraná rivers meet and Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil are all visible.<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/WbqTfiPCnv8FjOfqUreedtMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-709iduuN31s/T1-pJqCAcZI/AAAAAAAAD64/09jGzlqxldg/s640/P1000359.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/-dVK-GIrjRXUIDXAYpPcpdMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-uvE9shfvq4M/T1-pKqcC2QI/AAAAAAAAD7A/gzfvLmSGEv8/s640/P1000361.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/1ji3z2ENWy55QlB46ytKmtMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-TuKa3JefQzg/T1-pLCVWrBI/AAAAAAAAD7I/qvUnJqyk_bg/s640/P1000362.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/1ftB6M_PzSRzTJXHgyBYxdMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-TSVWySYPhi8/T3EmcE0QrdI/AAAAAAAAE1I/VhHrpf8eYuk/s640/DSCN1008.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/HN9zOAJ_ZgTYGDDgg00fqNMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-U0qSs50H3eg/TzF3nGvqx0I/AAAAAAAADUc/YG0x54jUBcE/s640/P1000364.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a>Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07688392926064554387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4558399279271983404.post-37666610121957136352012-04-11T15:25:00.002-04:002012-04-11T15:26:37.069-04:00DAY 22 – 2/3/12 IQUAZU FALLSToday we spent all day at Iquazu Falls National Park, from 1000-1600. on the advice of some locals we took Ruta 101 out of Iquazu. I'm glad we did, because it was one of the best roads we've been on to date. It was a beautiful red dirt road through the jungle that lasted for 60 km.<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/cXB4OrY6YNmoV48epNN-StMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-CSF1jwstBhQ/T3HG7MNz8RI/AAAAAAAAFAk/5FSRclUr1d4/s400/DSCN1149.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/c1qYyF5TURylWCvipN3xj9MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--lLyn3KBEEE/T1-pZ2UIP3I/AAAAAAAAD-c/S9bfJ0HORmA/s640/P1000426.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/aKV_yMI3RZNXkuwAgCPRQ9MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-LRr8SB75Bhw/T1-pZVS2WPI/AAAAAAAAD-Q/zrCMFcP7K9c/s640/P1000425.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/STqSAbTBFo9_XKGpLKv8PNMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-6GvH6eP-0oc/T3EtHGY8qgI/AAAAAAAAE8g/ownLkBXWdSE/s640/DSCN1159.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><br />We stopped for gas in a small boarder town with Brazil, San Antonio where we meet a very nice owner who gave us pens and key chains and was very happy to learn about our trip.
